Anthropic just released a plugin to assist in performing legal work. Within days, software stocks lost over $300 billion in market value.
Thomson Reuters dropped 20%. LegalZoom dropped 20%. RELX fell 15%. The Goldman Sachs US Software Index had its worst day since April. Jefferies called it the “SaaSpocalypse.” Bloomberg Intelligence called software sentiment “radioactive.”
But did $300 billion actually vanish — or did it just change hands? Anthropic’s valuation has been climbing steadily, and the message from investors is clear: the value isn’t disappearing. It’s migrating from the tools to the AI layer that orchestrates them.
